Estimates, not assessments

The calculator estimates the withholding your employer is likely to apply under ATO Schedules 7 and 11 — the PAYG amounts taken out before the money reaches you. Your final tax position is only settled when your return is assessed, and can differ: the flat 32% on unused leave is capped by an offset at assessment, ETP caps interact with other income and multiple payments, and details like pre-1993 long service leave or award entitlements above the NES aren't modelled. The known simplifications are listed openly on the calculator page. Treat every figure as an estimate to sanity-check against your employer's numbers — not as a promise of what you'll receive.

Decisions with deadlines

Some redundancy decisions are time-critical — notably the Fair Work Commission's 21-day deadline for unfair dismissal applications and the timing rules around ETPs paid within 12 months of termination. Don't let a calculator estimate, or waiting on information, delay getting real advice on those.

  1. Tax: a registered tax agent — check registration on the TPB public register — or the ATO on 13 28 61.
  2. Entitlements and dismissal: the Fair Work Ombudsman (13 13 94) or an employment lawyer.
  3. Money decisions after redundancy: Moneysmart (free, government-run) or a licensed financial adviser.
  4. Centrelink: Services Australia for how a payout affects JobSeeker waiting periods.
