Redundancy and Centrelink: the Income Maintenance Period

The most common — and most expensive — misunderstanding after a redundancy: assuming JobSeeker starts when the job ends. It doesn't. Your payout is treated as income for the weeks it represents, and support is delayed until that clock runs out. The runway panel estimates your IMP from the same inputs as your payslip.

§1What the Income Maintenance Period is

When you claim JobSeeker (and several other payments) after receiving leave or redundancy entitlements, Services Australia applies an Income Maintenance Period: the lump sum is treated as ongoing income for the period it would have covered as normal pay. During the IMP your payment is reduced — usually to zero — until the period ends.

§2How the weeks are counted

Each component of the final payout is converted back into weeks at your former rate of pay:

  • Redundancy pay — e.g. 8 weeks of severance = 8 weeks of IMP.
  • Unused annual leave — 4 weeks of leave paid out = 4 weeks.
  • Unused long service leave — likewise, at the rate it was paid.
  • Payment in lieu of notice — the notice weeks count too.

The components add together, and the IMP runs from the day after your employment ended (or from lodgement if you claim late — see §4). An ex gratia "golden handshake" paid because of the redundancy is generally assessed the same way.

§3The other two waiting periods

  • Ordinary Waiting Period — one week, applies to almost everyone.
  • Liquid Assets Waiting Period — up to 13 weeks when accessible savings (including the payout sitting in your account) exceed roughly $5,500 single with no dependants /$11,000 partnered or with dependants. Indexed — verify the current thresholds on servicesaustralia.gov.au. It runs concurrently with the IMP, so the longer of the two usually governs.

§4Why you lodge on day one anyway

Waiting periods run from lodgement, not from when the money runs out. Lodge the day your employment ends and the IMP clock and your claim process in parallel: support can start the moment the waiting periods expire. Wait five months "until I need it" and you restart the process five months late — the IMP is not shortened by the delay. Lodge, report the payout accurately, and let the clocks run.

§5Worked example: a 12-week IMP

8 weeks of NES redundancy pay + 4 weeks of unused annual leave paid out = an IMP of about12 weeks. With a one-week Ordinary Waiting Period running concurrently from lodgement, JobSeeker could start about 12 weeks after the dismissal — if the claim was lodged on day one.

§6Hardship waivers

The IMP can be waived or reduced in severe financial hardship — broadly, where the payout has been unavoidably spent (essential medical costs, urgent repairs, debt already due) and your remaining liquid assets fall under the test. It is discretionary and documented: keep receipts, and raise it explicitly with Services Australia rather than waiting to be offered it.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the Centrelink waiting period after a redundancy payout?

Roughly the number of weeks of pay your payout represents. Services Australia converts your redundancy pay, unused annual leave, long service leave and notice paid out into weeks at your former rate of pay — 8 weeks of redundancy pay plus 4 weeks of leave is about a 12-week Income Maintenance Period before JobSeeker starts.

Does unused annual leave count toward the Income Maintenance Period?

Yes. Unused annual leave, long service leave, sick leave paid out and payment in lieu of notice all count, alongside the redundancy payment itself. Each is converted to the number of weeks of pay it represents.

Should I wait until my payout runs out before claiming JobSeeker?

No — lodge immediately. Waiting periods run from when you lodge, not from when your money runs out. Claiming late doesn't shorten the IMP; it just delays the date support can start.

What is the Liquid Assets Waiting Period?

A separate waiting period of up to 13 weeks when your accessible savings exceed roughly $5,500 for a single with no dependants or $11,000 for couples/singles with dependants (indexed — verify current figures with Services Australia). It can run at the same time as the IMP, not on top of it.

Can the Income Maintenance Period be waived?

Services Australia can waive or reduce it in severe financial hardship — broadly, where you have unavoidably spent the payout (for example on essential medical costs or urgent debts) and fall under the applicable liquid assets test. Document everything and ask; it is not automatic.

Waiting-period mechanics per Services Australia guidance at time of writing; dollar thresholds are indexed quarterly — always confirm current figures on servicesaustralia.gov.au before relying on them.
